Manipur Land Dispute Erupts in Deadly Violence, Curfew Imposed

Imphal: A tragic incident unfolded in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Thursday as violent clashes stemming from a land dispute claimed the life of a 36-year-old Naga man and left five others injured, as confirmed by an official on Friday.

In the aftermath of the deadly confrontation, the district administration swiftly implemented an indefinite curfew across the entire contested region in an effort to quell further unrest.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the intense confrontation erupted at approximately 2 pm on Thursday, pitting villagers from Shangching village against those from Lungreiphung Tang village within the Ukhrul district.

Amidst the escalating violence, Ramyon RK, a 36-year-old resident and son of Ramlung RK from Shangching village, tragically succumbed to injuries sustained during the clash, sources have verified.

The sources further detailed that the exchange resulted in bullet injuries for several individuals: Aron RK (36), Joseph RK (54), and Peter RK (73), all hailing from Shangching village, along with Rejoice RK (34) and Ningshang RK (60) from Lungreiphung Tang.

Responding to the grave situation, the Additional District Magistrate, Polly Makan, issued an immediate prohibitory order under Sub-Section 1 of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This order, effective from 2:30 PM on April 17, 2025, applies to both villages and remains in force until further notice.

The official notice explicitly forbids any individual from leaving their homes or participating in any actions that could potentially disrupt the already fragile law and order within the affected areas.

Concurrently, authorities have moved swiftly to deploy a sufficient number of security personnel to the disputed zone. Their primary objective is to prevent any recurrence of violence and to actively work towards the restoration of peace and stability in the region.
