Manipur: Landslide in Tamenglong Claims Two Lives, Injures One

Northeast Desk, July 30, 2024 A devastating landslide in Dimthanlong village, Tamenglong Ward No. 3, has tragically claimed the lives of a mother and her child. The incident, which occurred last night, also left one person critically injured.

The injured individual, identified as Ringsinlung Kahmei, is receiving urgent medical care. Expressing his condolences, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh took to social media, stating, “Deeply saddened to learn about the tragic loss of a mother and her child due to the landslide that occurred last night in Dimthanlong village, Tamenglong Ward No. 3. My heart goes out to the bereaved family. Our thoughts are with Mr. Ringsinlung Kahmei, who has been critically injured in this incident. We are taking immediate steps to ensure he receives the necessary medical attention and advanced care.”

This tragedy comes amidst a heated political debate over the Union Budget’s allocation for Manipur. Chief Minister Singh has firmly rebutted opposition accusations of neglect, stating, “It’s their petty politics. Manipur has already received not less than Rs 250 crore for hailstorms and floods, and we have already distributed it to the people.”

The opposition has criticized the recent budget for its perceived failure to address the needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and provide sufficient flood relief. On July 23, Lok Sabha MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam condemned the Union Budget 2024, claiming it overlooked Manipur’s urgent needs. “Absence thy name is Manipur—that’s what this budget says! There is no mention of flood relief or a rehabilitation package for IDPs in our state,” Dr. Akoijam stated.

In response, CM Singh highlighted the substantial funds allocated to Manipur for natural disaster relief, emphasizing that these funds have been effectively utilized to support affected residents. The ongoing political dispute underscores the broader challenges facing the state as it navigates both immediate crises and long-term recovery efforts.
