Manipur: LDA Seeks Support at Bhopal Workshop to Restore Loktak Lake Amid Environmental Challenges
Northeast Desk, 25th September: Representatives from the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) attended a pivotal workshop this week, commemorating 25 years of partnership between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Madhya Pradesh government. The two-day event, held at the luxurious Taj Lakefront, served as a vital platform for discussing urgent environmental issues and garnering support for the LDA’s lake restoration initiatives.
The workshop convened officials from various states, financial institutions, and expert organizations, featuring presentations that spanned a range of topics, including climate resilience, renewable energy, urban development, and public sector management. Among the pressing matters highlighted was the significant environmental impact of the Ithai Barrage on Loktak Lake. LDA Chairman Moirangthem Asnikumar Singh pointed out that the barrage, which has been operational since 1983 as part of a hydroelectric project, has detrimentally affected the lake’s ecosystem and the livelihoods of local communities.
Singh emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive post-environmental impact assessment to implement effective strategies for safeguarding the lake’s future. “We must act swiftly to understand and mitigate the effects of the Ithai Barrage,” he stated during the discussions.
The LDA team presented updates on their ambitious “Sustainable Loktak Lake Ecological Restoration, Livelihood and Eco-Tourism Project,” which is poised to receive both funding and technical support from the ADB. They also shared insights from an Expert Advisory Committee report and an Integrated Management Plan for the lake, recently approved to guide future actions.
In his address to ADB officials, Singh urged for the expedited approval of their project, expressing optimism for ongoing support in protecting Loktak Lake. “Our vision is to transform Loktak into an iconic wetland site of global significance,” he declared, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in environmental conservation.
The workshop also featured contributions from other officials from Manipur, including Public Works Department Secretary Ksh. Robert Singh, who provided updates on the status of the Imphal Ring Road Project, further emphasizing the region’s commitment to sustainable development.
