Manipur Lecturers Suspend Strike as Government Agrees to Demands
Imphal: Lecturers in Manipur from the 2018 batch have called off their prolonged pen-down strike after reaching a consensus with the state government. The strike, which commenced on July 21, was initiated by the Lecturers’ Association Manipur (LAM) to protest against significant delays in their regularisation and the non-disbursement of pending salaries.
The breakthrough came during a recent meeting where both parties arrived at a mutual understanding. Government officials have assured LAM that all necessary groundwork for the regularisation files is now complete. These documents are slated for final submission and approval by the Governor-in-Council within the next two to three days. Officials attributed the earlier delays to the recent appointment of senior department officials, which had stalled procedural work.
A crucial point of the agreement includes the government’s commitment to withdraw the transfer orders issued against three key LAM executives—a primary demand of the protesting lecturers. While suspending the strike, the association has urged the government to honour the understanding without any further delays.
The 603 lecturers, appointed in 2019, had launched the strike citing the government’s failure to deliver on previous promises. Despite assurances of regular salaries starting from April 2023, the regularisation process had remained incomplete, leaving all 603 lecturers without pay to date. The association hopes this new agreement will finally resolve their long-standing issues.
