Manipur Makes Significant Strides in Eradicating Illegal Poppy Cultivation

Imphal: A recent study conducted by the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre has revealed substantial progress in the state’s fight against illegal poppy cultivation.

Since 2017, authorities have successfully eradicated a staggering 19,135.6 acres of poppy fields across 12 districts, a testament to the state’s unwavering commitment to curbing the narcotics trade.

Kangpokpi district emerged as the epicenter of illegal poppy cultivation, with 4,454.4 acres destroyed during the specified period. Close behind were Ukhrul and Churachandpur, where 3,348 acres and 2,713.8 acres, respectively, were cleared of the illicit crop.

The study, which relied on data provided by the state police’s ‘Narcotics and Affairs of Border’ wing, also highlighted significant reductions in other districts. Tengnoupal, Chandel, and Senapati witnessed the eradication of 2,575 acres, 1,982.5 acres, and 1,682 acres of poppy fields, respectively.

A comparative analysis of the data revealed a substantial decline in poppy cultivation between 2021-22 and 2023-24. The area under cultivation decreased from 28,598.91 acres to 11,288.1 acres, marking a 32.13% reduction.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to X to express the state government’s unwavering resolve to eradicate illegal poppy cultivation. This significant achievement underscores Manipur’s proactive approach to combating the narcotics trade and safeguarding its future.
