Manipur Man Arrested for Alleged Torture and Attempted Murder of Wife

Imphal, Manipur – In a swift response to a harrowing incident, police have apprehended the husband of a 20-year-old woman who was allegedly subjected to brutal torture in Imphal. The victim, a mother of two originally from Tangjing, Bishnupur district and currently residing in New Checkon, Imphal, was reportedly tied to a bed, forcibly fed alcohol, and severely beaten.

The ordeal came to light after the woman was discovered near the Loktak Project Gate, where her alleged tormentors are said to have abandoned her under the cover of night. Neighbors, upon finding her in critical condition, immediately transported her to Churachandpur District Hospital. Witnesses recounted the horrific state of the young woman, describing her as slipping in and out of consciousness, vomiting, and barely responsive, with bruises covering her entire body.

Following the victim’s rescue and admission to the hospital, a Zero FIR was initially lodged at the Women Police Station in Churachandpur. Demonstrating prompt action, the police subsequently registered a formal case at the Women Police Station in Imphal East District, which led to the swift arrest of the victim’s husband.

The alleged brutality of the crime has drawn strong condemnation from various civil society organizations. Kuki-Zomi bodies, including the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights, have voiced their outrage over the incident. The young woman, who is battling for her life, has become a focal point of concern, highlighting issues of domestic violence in the region. Investigations into the matter are currently underway.
