Manipur Marks Nupi Lal Numit, Honoring Women’s Resilience Against British Oppression
Imphal: Manipur commemorated Nupi Lal Numit, a day dedicated to honoring the bravery and resilience of Manipuri women who fought against British colonial oppression and artificial famine in the early 20th century.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh led state officials in paying tribute at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex, underscoring the pivotal role Manipuri women played in social movements throughout history. At a ceremony held at GP Woman’s College, Singh highlighted the courage of women during two significant uprisings in 1904 and 1939, as well as their critical role in defeating Burmese invaders during the Seven Year Devastation period (1819-1826).
Singh also acknowledged the ongoing contributions of women in various sectors, including social, economic, artistic, and sports. He announced several welfare initiatives aimed at further supporting women, such as the Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme, which provides financial assistance of Rs 500 per month to unemployed women over 40. Additionally, Ima markets have been constructed across districts, with another 10 sheds set to be inaugurated.
Addressing current challenges, Singh assured that both state and central governments are working toward resolving the ongoing crisis in the region, recognizing the complexity of the situation.
The ceremony included a dramatic performance by the Nupi Lal Memorial Association Drama Party, which symbolized the historical narrative of women’s resistance. Other notable attendees included women legislators I Nalini Devi, SS Olish, and S Kebi, with Minister Th Bishwajit presiding over the event.
