Manipur: Meetei-Mayek Script Welcomes Indian Constitution Publication; CM N Biren Singh Unveils Diglot Edition

Northeast Desk, 26th November: In a momentous event, the Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, unveiled the Meetei-Mayek edition of the Constitution of India in Imphal, the state capital. This Diglot edition release took place during the celebration of Constitution Day at the Cabinet hall of the CM Secretariat.

As part of the program, government officials, ministers, and MLAs participated by reading the preamble of India and honoring the translators responsible for translating the constitution into Manipuri.

This landmark decision not only celebrates and promotes the Manipuri script but also grants speakers of Manipuri, or Meiteilon, direct access to the principles embedded in the Indian Constitution.

Despite 73 years since the Constitution’s inception, its tenets have often remained elusive to the common person due to the absence of translations into local languages. This publication, incorporating amendments up to the 105th Amendment, is particularly significant in the Meetei Mayek script. Chief Minister N Biren Singh anticipates that this edition will become a valuable asset for the entire state, marking a crucial milestone in Manipur’s history.

Expressing gratitude to the Government of India for facilitating the release of the Constitution in Manipuri, CM N Biren Singh expressed pride in this achievement. He appreciated the honorable Prime Minister’s inclusive thinking and recognition of seemingly smaller matters, emphasizing the significance of publishing the Constitution in Manipur’s own script.

Furthermore, the Manipur CM highlighted the importance the BJP-led Central government has given to the state. He urged the people to reciprocate this support, citing examples such as the unexpected Inner Line Permit (ILP) granted to Manipur by Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Singh called for unity, urging the citizens to work together for a better and more united India.
