Manipur: Missing Differently-Abled Man Found Buried in Imphal West
Imphal West – The week-long disappearance of 29-year-old Chesam Abdul Kadir, also known as Achouba, has ended in tragedy with the discovery of his body buried near a riverbank at Shamurou Naorem, under the Wangoi police station. Achouba, a differently-abled resident of Paobitek Mayai Leikai, had been missing since he left his home on the night of June 10.
Following a rigorous investigation into the missing person’s report filed at Wangoi Police Station, authorities unearthed the grim truth of Achouba’s demise. On Tuesday, police, accompanied by an executive magistrate, a forensic team, and grieving family members, exhumed the body.
A criminal case has been officially registered, and a comprehensive investigation is now underway. In a significant development, police have already apprehended nine suspects in connection with the case, including six alleged members of the Arambai Tenggol. Authorities have assured the public that all individuals involved in this heinous crime will be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the local community, deeply affected by the incident, has formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing of Chesam Abdul Kadir. Earlier, JAC members and locals had gathered at the police station, demanding swift action to locate Kadir and threatening protests if their pleas went unheard. On Tuesday, these protests intensified around the Wangoi police station, with JAC supporters and residents demanding immediate justice. Police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the agitated crowd.
The Manipur Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has strongly condemned the killing. MMWO Secretary General, Firoz Khan, has called for deterrent punishment for all those found guilty in this case. The police have urged the public to maintain calm, cooperate with the ongoing investigation, and refrain from believing in unsubstantiated rumours.
