Manipur MLA Welcomes Replacement of Assam Rifles with Central Forces Amidst Protests

Northeast Desk, 12th September: Manipur MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh announced that the phasing out of two Assam Rifles units from the state has been well-received by the people, who are hopeful for enhanced peace and stability. The units are being replaced by other central forces, a move initiated by the central government in response to the public’s demands.

However, the decision has sparked protests in Kangpokpi Town, where hundreds of Kuki-Zo women staged a demonstration in front of the 22 Assam Rifles Post, opposing the withdrawal of paramilitary forces. The protesters are demanding that the Centre reconsider its decision to replace the Assam Rifles with the CRPF.

The Kuki-Zo community had earlier resolved to seal all Assam Rifles camps in Kangpokpi district if the decision wasn’t revoked. The women’s protest highlights the complexities and differing opinions within the state regarding the replacement of security forces.
