Manipur MLAs Urge Centre to Reinstate Elected Government Amidst Persistent Unrest
Imphal: Twenty-one Members of the Legislative Assembly from Manipur have collectively appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, imploring them to reinstate an elected government in the state that has been grappling with violence.
The memorandum, formally submitted to both the Prime Minister’s Office and the Union Home Minister’s Office in New Delhi, arrives at a critical juncture as Manipur continues to be governed under President’s Rule, which was imposed on February 13, 2025. While the MLAs acknowledged the initial hope that President’s Rule brought for peace and stability, they have now voiced their growing unease regarding the ongoing disturbances and the apparent lack of significant progress towards normalcy in the region.
In their representation, the legislators highlighted the increasing anxiety among the populace due to the recurring incidents of violence. They also pointed to the escalating public demand for the establishment of an elected government. The memorandum explicitly stated, “Many civil society organisations have come out openly against the imposition of President’s Rule and are demanding the installation of a popular government. Public rallies and street corner meetings have intensified, with blame directed at ruling MLAs for failing to stake claim to form a government.”
The signatory MLAs conveyed their firm commitment to the central leadership, assuring that, if their request for reinstatement is granted, they are prepared to dedicate themselves fully to the task of restoring peace and stability throughout Manipur.
The joint memorandum bears the signatures of representatives from a wide array of constituencies, demonstrating a unified front among these elected officials. The signatories include Lourembam Rameshwor (Keirao), Paonam Brojen (Wangjing-Tentha), Kh Raghumani (Uripok), T Robindro (Thanga), Dr Y Radheshyam (Hiyanglam), Md Ashab Uddin (Jiribam), Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong), Th Radheshyam (Heirok), Nishikant Sapam (Keishamthong), S Rajen (Lamsang), Kh Loken (Wangoi), J Kumo Sha (Karong), Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao), Kongkham Robindro (Mayang Imphal), Yumnam Khemchand (Singjamei), Thangjam Arunkumar (Wangkhei), K Leishiyo (Phungyar), Kh Joykisan (Thangmeiband), S Kebi (Naoriya Pakhanglakpa), L Losii Dikho (Mao), and Ram Muivah (Ukhrul).
As the situation in Manipur remains delicate, this collective appeal from 21 MLAs underscores the growing political momentum for a return to a democratically elected administration in the state.
