Manipur Mourns BSF Jawan Martyred in Jammu Firing
Imphal, Manipur – The state of Manipur is enveloped in grief following the news of the demise of Border Security Force (BSF) Constable Deepak Chingakham. The braveheart succumbed to injuries sustained during intense cross-border firing initiated by Pakistani forces in the R S Pura sector of Jammu on Saturday, May 10.
Hailing from Yairipok Yambem in the Imphal East district, Constable Chingakham was among the eight BSF personnel who were critically injured in the heavy shelling along the volatile International Border in Jammu and Kashmir. Tragically, he breathed his last on Sunday, May 11, making the supreme sacrifice while safeguarding the nation’s borders. The young constable leaves behind his grieving parents and a brother.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur has expressed profound sorrow at the loss of the valiant jawan. The party’s state president, Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, conveyed her deepest condolences, lauding Constable Chingakham’s exceptional bravery and unwavering dedication to the nation. In a heartfelt message shared on X, she described him as a true son of Manipur, stating, “His courage and devotion reflect the unwavering spirit and commitment of the Manipuri people. We honour his bravery and stand with his family and comrades in this time of grief. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Echoing these sentiments, the Congress party in Manipur also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The state president of the Congress, Keisham Meghachandra, asserted that the entire state and the nation stand proud of Constable Chingakham’s courageous service and unwavering commitment to the country. He affirmed, “The people of Manipur, and indeed the entire nation, are proud of his bravery and commitment. We will remember him for his supreme sacrifice for our motherland.”
The Border Security Force (BSF) itself paid a solemn tribute to the fallen comrade. In an official statement, the BSF confirmed the tragic incident, stating, “Constable Deepak Chingakham sustained fatal injuries during cross-border firing along the International Boundary in R S Pura area, Jammu district, on May 10, and attained martyrdom on May 11.”
In honour of the fallen hero, a wreath-laying ceremony has been scheduled for Monday at the BSF’s frontier headquarters. The BSF further revealed that another brave soldier, Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imteyaz, also lost his life in the same unfortunate incident. The recent escalation in cross-border firing follows closely on the heels of India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched as a decisive response to the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22.
