Manipur Mourns the Loss of Veteran Leader Thangminlen Kipgen
Imphal: In a profound display of grief and respect, thousands gathered to mourn the demise of Thangminlen Kipgen, a four-time MLA from Kangpokpi Assembly Constituency and a former minister of Manipur. The 71-year-old leader, a stalwart among the Kuki-Zo community, passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer at his native village, Haipi, in Kangpokpi District.
Kipgen’s political journey, which began in 1995, spanned four consecutive terms in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. Known for his unwavering dedication to the rights and development of tribal communities, Kipgen held several significant positions, including Minister of Power, Minister of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, and Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee.
Born on July 7, 1953, Kipgen was deeply committed to public service, championing education, youth welfare, and local infrastructure development. His initiatives included scholarships for meritorious students, youth empowerment programs, and awareness campaigns addressing social issues like drug abuse.
A former President of the National People’s Party (NPP) and Chief of Haipi Village, Kipgen was regarded as a pillar of leadership and an advocate for peace and unity. His efforts to improve connectivity and living standards in Kangpokpi earned him admiration across Manipur and beyond.
Kipgen’s passing marks the end of an era for his followers and admirers. Thousands paid their final respects at his residence in Haipi Village, where a condolence ceremony was held in his honour. He was laid to rest with full honours at the Haipi Village cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and compassion that will continue to inspire future generations.
