Manipur: NSCN(IM) cadres open fire at Congress LS candidate’s meeting in Ukhrul, second attack in a week

Northeast Desk, 20th March: Alleged cadres of the banned militant group National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) reportedly opened fire on Alfred Kangnam Arthur, the Congress Party’s candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The incident took place on Monday, March 19, at Teinem village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. Fortunately, Arthur emerged unharmed from the attack.

According to PCC President K Meghachandra, the incident occurred around 2 pm during a village-level consultative meeting organized by the Congress Party in preparation for the upcoming elections. Meghachandra strongly condemned the attack, raising concerns about the safety and feasibility of conducting elections in the region amidst such threats.

Police authorities confirmed that the firing occurred just before the scheduled meeting commenced. Despite the unsettling incident, the public bravely persevered with the planned program, which proceeded as scheduled and concluded with an attendance of approximately 400 individuals.

This incident follows a similar disruption on March 18, where unidentified individuals fired multiple gunshots to disrupt an interaction program at TK Woodland Resort in Shirui. Despite the attempts to intimidate, the public demonstrated resilience by continuing with the scheduled programs in both instances.
