Manipur Observes 81st Anniversary of Historic INA Flag Hoisting in Moirang
Imphal: Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla presided over a commemorative event today at the Indian National Army (INA) Martyr’s Memorial Complex in Moirang, Bishnupur District, marking the 81st Anniversary of Flag Hoisting Day.
The solemn occasion honoured the significant moment during India’s struggle for independence when the INA, under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, first raised the Indian tricolour on liberated Indian territory in 1944.
During the ceremony, Governor Bhalla paid his respects by laying floral tributes at the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He also toured the INA Museum, where he viewed various historical items, documents, and mementos that chronicle the INA’s efforts and their valiant contributions to India’s freedom.
Addressing the attendees, Governor Bhalla conveyed his deep sense of patriotism and respect for the historical significance of the location. He stated, “Standing on this sacred ground, where the Indian national flag was first unfurled by the INA on free Indian soil, fills me with profound honour. This act was more than symbolic; it was a powerful expression of our nation’s fervent desire for liberation.”
The Governor emphasized the crucial role of Moirang in the nation’s fight for independence and reflected on the lasting inspiration derived from the bravery of the INA. He remarked, “The INA’s fight was characterized by unwavering resolve and action, not diplomacy. Although their presence in Moirang was brief, the legacy they left behind continues to fuel the spirit of patriotism in generations to come.”
The event was attended by several notable individuals, including MLA Thongam Shanti Singh, Lt. General (Retd.) K. Himalay Singh, Maj. General (Retd.) J.S. Nanda, Maj. General S.S. Kartikeya, Brigadier Neeraj Sharma, DY IGAR (South), M. Joy Singh, IAS, along with senior officials, ex-servicemen, and numerous members of the public.
