Guwahati: A booth level officer was suspended for violating the election model code of conduct(MCC) on Wednesday after a video footage of him speaking at a public meeting in support of an aspiring candidate in the Wangkhem assembly constituency was posted online.
The officer has been identified as Mutum Shyamo Singh is a booth-level officer of 32/10 Polling Station of 32- Wangkhem assembly constituency.
In an order issued by the office of the district election officer Thoubal A Subhas Singh on Wednesday stated that it is aware of the video clips of Shyamo while he was addressing the public meeting at Yairipok Bishnunaha.
According to the information provided by the returning officer, Shyamo is employed as an accredited graduate teacher at Tangjeng Ningthou High School (Aided) in the Thoubal district of Manipur.
It stated that he is on deputation with the Election Commission of India (ECI) and is working under the Commission’s supervision and control for the production of electoral rolls, election conduct, and other matters.
The order said that anyone appointed in connection with an election shall not act in any way to advance the prospects of a candidate’s election under Section 129 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
According to the reports, it is possible that Shyamo would face disciplinary action because election officials participating in such incidents are violating the Election Model Code of Conduct.
In exercise of the powers provided by sub-rule (1) of Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control, and Appeal) Rules, 1965, Mutum Shyamo Singh has been suspended with immediate effect and until further order, according to the statement.
The headquarters of Shyamo will be Thoubal and he should not leave the headquarters without obtaining prior permission from the district election officer, Thoubal during the period in which the order remains in effect, it added.
