Manipur: One arrested with gold bars in Kakching
Guwahati: A 23-year-old gold smuggler has been arrested by the Manipur police and seized at least 18 gold bars from Kakching district of Manipur on Thrusday.
The arrestee has been identified as Prakash Kshetri who is a resident of Ward No 8, Moreh in the Tengnoupal district.
Based on a tip off, Manipur police intercepted a car at Pallel check post of the district and recovered the 18 bars of gold weighing 2.988 kilogram and arrested the driver of the vehicle Kshetri.
Moreover, the police officials seized while have been smuggled from Mynamar through Moreh town, a rapidly developing trade point in India on the border with Myanmar, with the city of Tamu on the other side of the border.
However, the estimated cost of the gold bars is said to be Rs 1.50 crore.
It needs to be noted that the seized gold and the arrested person was handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation.
Sharing the news on Twitter, Manipur Chief Minster N. Biren Singh wrote, “Gold smuggler busted with large amount of gold! As we intensify the crackdown against the smugglers, the Kakching Police has apprehended one Prakash Kshetri (23) a resident of Moreh, Ward No 8 along with 18 bars of gold weighing 2.9 kgs during frisking at Pallel check-post today.”
