Manipur Peace Process Hopes Pinned on Swift Progress Amidst High Court Anniversary
Imphal: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, addressing attendees at the 12th anniversary celebration of the Manipur High Court in Imphal on March 23rd, voiced his fervent hope for an accelerated peace process within the strife-torn state. Meghwal articulated his prayers for Manipur, emphasizing the necessity of rapid progress to enable the state’s contribution to the larger “Viksit Bharat” initiative.
The anniversary event witnessed the presence of key figures, including Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and a delegation of Supreme Court judges, highlighting the significance of the occasion amidst the ongoing turmoil. The Supreme Court delegation, headed by Justice B R Gavai, had arrived in Manipur on Saturday, undertaking visits to relief camps and engaging with internally displaced persons.
During their visit, the delegation virtually inaugurated a legal services camp, a medical camp, and a legal aid clinic from the Mini Secretariat in Lamka, Churachandpur district. Justice Gavai, in his address, implored the people of Manipur to unite in their efforts to restore peace, expressing his optimism that the “ongoing difficult phase” would soon conclude through the collaborative efforts of the executive, legislature, and judiciary.
The context of these appeals remains the severe ethnic violence that has plagued Manipur since May 2023, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 250 individuals and displacing thousands. The conflict, rooted in tensions between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups, continues to cast a long shadow over the region, underscoring the urgency of the peace process.
