Northeast Desk, August 31, 2024 — In a significant development, Manipur Police arrested a cadre of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) (Taibanganba) faction on August 30. The cadre, identified as Laishom Sundar Singh, 38, was apprehended from Lamphel in Imphal West District for his involvement in extortion activities in the region.

During the arrest, security forces recovered several items from Singh’s possession, including two mobile handsets, a side bag, a wallet containing Rs 36,320, and a four-wheeler vehicle. The arrest marks a critical step in the ongoing efforts to curb the activities of the outlawed group.

In a separate development, security forces carried out extensive search operations and area domination exercises across the fringe and vulnerable areas in both hill and valley districts of Manipur. These operations led to the discovery of a substantial cache of arms and ammunition. Among the items seized were a locally-made single-barrel gun, a country-made .22 P37 magazine, six “Pompi” guns, 15 rounds of live ammunition, and three each of WP smoke grenades and tear smoke cells.

Additional recoveries included three radio sets, two tube launchers, and 37 fired cases. A detonator and bamboo-made Pompi ammunition were also found during the operation conducted at Changsang Hill in Imphal East.

The recent operations underscore the ongoing challenges in maintaining security and law and order in the region. The Manipur Police and security forces remain vigilant, continuing their efforts to dismantle insurgent networks and recover illegal arms to ensure the safety of the state’s residents.
