Manipur Police Arrest Key Suspect in Murder of Chiru Tribesman

Northeast Desk, 18th July: Manipur Police have apprehended Khangenbam Sanaton, also known as Sanatomba Singh, aged 53, in connection with the brutal murder of Mirangge Chiru, a member of the Chiru tribe. Singh was arrested and subsequently presented before the Court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Imphal West-I, where he was remanded to eight days of police custody.

Confirming the arrest, the Manipur Police announced on their official X handle: “In connection with the murder of (L) Mirangge Chiru on 15.07.2024, Manipur Police arrested one individual identified as Khangenbam Sanaton @ Sanatomba Singh (53 years). He was later produced before the Court of the Hon’ble JMFC Imphal West-I and remanded to 8 (eight) days police custody. Further efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other suspects involved in the case.”

The incident, which took place on July 15, saw Mirangge Chiru, a resident of Kangchup Chiru, Manipur, reportedly tortured to death by unknown assailants. This has plunged the local community into a state of mourning and outrage.

Family members of the victim have urged the authorities to expedite the investigation and swiftly bring all responsible parties to justice.

In a joint statement, the United Naga Council (UNC) and the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) vehemently condemned the murder. “The cold-blooded murder of Mirangge Chiru on July 15, 2024, by an armed assailant is deeply regrettable. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” the statement read. Both organizations assured their full cooperation to ensure justice is served.

COCOMI emphasized their moral responsibility and expressed concern for the welfare and future security of the victim’s family. They called on authorities to apprehend all culprits involved and conduct a thorough investigation into the crime.

Efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining suspects and bring closure to the grieving community.
