Manipur Police Crack Down on Fake News with FIRs Against WhatsApp Groups
Imphal – In a decisive move to curb misinformation, Manipur Police have registered six separate FIRs against WhatsApp groups and channels for circulating fake and inflammatory news in Churachandpur district. The content allegedly caused fear, panic, and public alarm, prompting authorities to take legal action against those responsible.
Officials warned that further legal measures would be taken against other channels if they continue to spread false or provocative information. Emphasizing the risks posed by misinformation, police urged the public to verify news before sharing it, highlighting that the spread of unverified content could escalate tensions and disturb public order.
The police have assured that stringent actions will be taken to identify and prosecute those involved in disseminating fake news. The move underscores rising concerns over the misuse of social media platforms to disrupt peace and stability in the region.
Meanwhile, security forces in Manipur intensified their search operations and area domination exercises across the fringe and vulnerable areas of the hill and valley districts.
To ensure the safe movement of essential goods, authorities facilitated the passage of 230 vehicles along NH-37 and 421 vehicles along NH-2 under strict security measures. Additionally, security convoys were deployed in sensitive areas to safeguard the transportation of critical supplies.
A total of 109 checkpoints were established across different districts, enhancing security surveillance in both hill and valley regions as part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.
