Manipur Police Crack Down on Illegal SIM Card Racket Linked to Extortion

Imphal: Manipur Police have launched an extensive investigation into the illegal sale of activated SIM cards using forged identity documents, registering a formal case at Porompat Police Station.

Officials revealed that these SIM cards have been exploited by underground and anti-social elements to facilitate extortion and intimidate civilians, raising serious security concerns.

The racket came to light during a recent criminal probe when investigators uncovered that several SIM cards, issued under the names of unsuspecting individuals, were being used by cadres of an underground outfit for illegal activities. Shockingly, many of the subscribers had no knowledge that SIM cards had been obtained in their names and were being misused for criminal operations.

As part of the ongoing crackdown, multiple raids have already been conducted, with authorities confirming that further enforcement actions will follow. In a strict advisory to telecom operators, the police have urged mobile service providers to implement stringent verification measures at all levels to prevent similar fraudulent activities.

Any lapses in compliance, they warned, would invite severe legal consequences, as law enforcement intensifies efforts to curb the misuse of mobile networks for organized crime.
