Manipur Police Crack Down on Illegal Stone Extraction and Militant Activities
Imphal: In a significant operation, the Manipur Police arrested five individuals involved in unauthorised stone extraction at Lungthar village, Thoubal district, on April 2.
The accused, identified as Wairokpam Somorjit Meitei, Keisham Sumonanda Meitei, Haobam Naocha Singh, Md. Rami Khan, and Md. Abir Khan, were caught in the act of illegal quarrying.
The police also seized three Tata Dumper Hyva trucks and one JCB from the site, effectively halting further illegal extraction. This crackdown highlights the police’s commitment to environmental protection and legal enforcement. The Manipur High Court had previously imposed a total ban on unauthorized stone quarrying, sand mining, and river pollution in the state.
In addition to the arrests, the police carried out search operations and area domination exercises in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts. During these operations, several incriminating items were recovered, including a Baofeng handheld set and a BP jacket with plate from Mollum village and adjoining areas in Churachandpur. Furthermore, carbines, magazines, and live ammunition were seized from Khangabok Loukol in Thoubal district.
The security personnel also launched another series of operations across the state, resulting in the arrests of three individuals, including two militants. These operations demonstrate the Manipur Police’s efforts to curb illegal activities and maintain law and order in the state.
