Manipur Police Crack Down on Wildlife Smuggling
Imphal: The Manipur police have made a significant arrest in a case involving the smuggling of peacock feather shafts across the Indo-Myanmar border. On May 17, authorities apprehended an individual attempting to transport a large consignment of the contraband near the Pallel Police Station gate area in Kakching district.
The accused, identified as Md. Sharifuddin, 24, a resident of Moreh Ward No. 5, was caught while trying to smuggle the feathers to Myanmar without proper documentation. During the operation, police seized four plastic sacks containing 72,000 peacock feather shafts, weighing approximately 142 kilograms.
The estimated value of the seized feathers in the international market is around Rs. 37 lakh. In addition to the contraband, one four-wheeler used in the transportation was also confiscated. The police have taken decisive action against wildlife smuggling, highlighting their commitment to protecting the environment and enforcing conservation laws.
