Manipur Police Crackdown: PREPAK (PRO) Militant Arrested, Massive Arms Cache Seized

Imphal — In a coordinated and decisive move against insurgency, Manipur Police have conducted two significant operations, apprehending a militant operative and recovering a substantial cache of weapons and equipment. The simultaneous crackdowns on August 26 underscore the state’s relentless efforts to neutralise proscribed groups operating within its borders.

In the Imphal East district, a special police team successfully apprehended Nongmaithem Naocha Meetei, an active member of the banned insurgent group PREPAK (PRO). The 26-year-old was nabbed at Napet Palli in the Lamlai police station area. Police sources revealed that Meetei, a resident of Yaingangpokpi Makha Leikai, was an active cadre for the proscribed organisation and his arrest is a major breakthrough in dismantling their network in the region.

Meanwhile, a separate operation in Jiribam district resulted in a massive arms haul, highlighting the continued flow of military-grade equipment to militant outfits. Security forces, acting on specific intelligence, conducted a raid in the Rashidpur area under the Jiribam police station. The search yielded a formidable arsenal, including a 7.62mm Self-Loading Rifle and a 5.56mm INSAS rifle, along with two pistols and 41 rounds of ammunition of different calibres. The recovery also included six handheld radio sets with a charger, indicating the high level of coordination among militants in the area. The cache further contained two rifle magazines, one ammunition pouch, and two pairs of jungle shoes, suggesting the operatives were prepared for prolonged missions in challenging terrains. Both operations are believed to have dealt a significant blow to the operational capabilities of insurgent groups in Manipur. Police are continuing their investigations to trace the origin of the recovered weapons and apprehend other members of the network.
