Manipur Police Investigate Controversial “Gun Salute” Marking Two Years of Ethnic Strife

Imphal: An official police report has been filed in response to a contentious “gun salute” event that took place in Saikul, situated in the Kangpokpi District. The ceremony was held to mark the second anniversary of the ethnic violence that has gripped Manipur since May of 2023.

In the aftermath of the May 3 incident, authorities swiftly conducted raids in the area, leading to the confiscation of five single-barrel firearms along with camouflage attire. This operation was initiated immediately following the anniversary, which was observed with widespread shutdowns and large gatherings throughout the northeastern state, commemorating two years since the eruption of conflict between the Meitei community, predominantly residing in the Imphal valley, and the Kuki-Zo communities in the hill districts.

The Manipur Police have issued a statement confirming that “local leaders and elders were summoned to Police Station.” The statement further asserted, “Raids will continue to arrest the miscreants and seize the other guns. Organisers of the programme will be dealt as per law.”

The ongoing investigation underscores the persistent tensions within the region, where the issue of ethnic conflict has remained a significant challenge for the past two years. Authorities are actively pursuing those involved in organizing and participating in the memorial ceremony.
