Manipur Police Nabs Four KCP (PWG) Militants in Extortion Crackdown

Imphal: In a significant blow to insurgent activities, Manipur Police and security forces today announced the arrest of four active cadres of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) for their deep involvement in widespread extortion rackets across multiple districts. The arrests, made through meticulously planned separate operations in Bishnupur and Imphal, underscore the state’s unwavering resolve in its ongoing crackdown on insurgency.

Among those apprehended from Utlou area in Bishnupur were Laitonjam Ramakanta Meitei, 34, of Imphal East, and Thongam Herojit Singh, 38, of Imphal West. The duo was caught red-handed while extorting money from unsuspecting locals and businesses in the Nambol vicinity. Meitei, self-proclaimed as a section commander within the KCP (PWG), is believed to command a group of over 15 operatives. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are being intensified to trace and apprehend the remaining members of his network.

In a separate, but equally crucial operation, Thoudam Santosh Singh alias Henthoiba, 23, hailing from Thoubal, was taken into custody from Moirang Okshongbung in Bishnupur. His arrest is linked to a series of extortion attempts targeting educational institutions in Thoubal district. A mobile phone and an Aadhaar card were recovered from his possession at the time of apprehension.

Furthering their extensive operations, law enforcement officials also apprehended Potshangbam Jeet Meetei alias Norjit, 55, of Imphal West, from Kekrupat, North AOC. Meetei is alleged to have been involved in extorting and intimidating various civilians, including owners of brick kilns and government employees. A mobile phone and a small amount of cash were seized from him.

Meanwhile, parallel to these anti-insurgency efforts, Manipur Police continued its rigorous enforcement drives to curb motor vehicle violations. A total of 59 challans were issued on July 8, accumulating fines amounting to ₹1.31 lakh. This follows a special drive conducted just a day prior, where tinted films were removed from 14 vehicles in adherence to regulatory norms.

Security forces across the state are maintaining an elevated state of vigilance. As part of these comprehensive security measures, 111 checkpoints were strategically established across both hill and valley regions on July 8. These efforts led to the detention of 12 individuals for various infractions. Furthermore, the safe passage of 235 vehicles transporting essential goods along NH-37 was meticulously ensured, with stringent security protocols in place at all vulnerable and sensitive locations to prevent any untoward incidents.
