Manipur Police Strikes Major Blow Against Illicit Liquor Trade
Imphal: In a significant operation targeting the illegal liquor trade, Manipur Police have apprehended two individuals and seized a massive consignment of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth an estimated Rs 55 lakh. The arrests were made on July 26 in the Mantripukhri area, falling under the jurisdiction of Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district, as part of the ongoing crackdown against such illicit activities.
The arrested duo has been identified as Thangjam Arbin Singh, 28, a resident of Sagolband Thangjam Leikai in Imphal West district, and Keisham Santa Meetei, 40, hailing from Kangsoibi Mapal in Bishnupur district. Police sources confirmed that a staggering 16,073 bottles of various IMFL brands were recovered from their possession. Preliminary investigations reveal that the two were transporting the substantial liquor consignment without any valid documentation or authorization, a clear contravention of the state’s excise laws.
Authorities have stated that further investigations are actively underway to unearth the origin of the seized liquor and to dismantle the broader distribution network involved. The possibility of these arrests leading to a larger smuggling racket operating both within and outside Manipur is not being ruled out by police officials. This substantial seizure marks one of the largest in recent times, underscoring the unwavering commitment of the Manipur Police in their intensified efforts to curb the illegal liquor trade and associated criminal enterprises plaguing the state.
