Manipur Pollution Control Board Promotes Digital Tool to Curb Single-Use Plastic Pollution
Imphal: The Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has urged residents to widely promote and utilise the SUP Public Grievance App, a digital platform designed to combat pollution caused by Single-Use Plastics (SUPs).
This call to action follows the Board’s Second Inter-Departmental Coordination Meeting on ‘Cleanliness of Imphal City’, held on March 7, 2025.
The SUP Public Grievance App, initially launched by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi, empowers citizens to report instances of banned SUP items being used, manufactured, or stocked directly to the authorities.
This initiative aligns with India’s broader commitment to eliminating harmful plastics, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to phase out SUPs by 2022, announced during World Environment Day on June 5, 2018.
Despite the official enforcement of the ban on identified SUP items across India on June 30, 2022, under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 (as amended), violations persist in many areas. To address this, the SUP Public Grievance App provides a user-friendly platform for citizens to lodge complaints regarding illegal SUP activities.
To access the app, residents can download it via the QR code available on the CPCB website (cpcb.nic.in) or directly from the Google Play Store and Apple Store.
MPCB officials stress that public engagement is crucial for effective enforcement of the ban, encouraging residents of Manipur, particularly in Imphal, to actively utilise the app to report violations. By increasing awareness and accessibility of the platform, authorities hope to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
