Manipur: Protesters stage a massive rally as the Meitei community’s demand for ST status grows

Digital Desk: Protests were held on January 31 across Manipur for the scheduled tribes (ST) list’s inclusion of Meitei or Meetei.

In order to discuss the inclusion of Meitei or Meetei in the ST list, the Tribe Demand Committee Mànipur (STDCM) held a public meeting at the Koirangei Bazaar Community Hall in collaboration with up to 20 local clubs and 20 women’s organisations of the Koirengei areas. Following the conference, a human chain protest was staged.

During the protest, the protesters shouted things like, “Meitei or Meetei should have constitutional protection,” “The state administration should deliver the necessary documentation for Meitei or Meetei to be included in the ST list,” and other things.

K. Bogendrajit, general secretary of STDCM, spoke to the media on the day of the demonstration and stated that the committee has been organising several campaigns for the past 20 years to add Meitei or Meetei to the ST list. They have so far delivered memoranda to more than 34 MLAs and ministers as part of their ongoing struggle.

Despite the fact that political authorities had accepted all of the memo and even given their approval, They haven’t yet noticed any indication that the required suggestions will be sent, though.

He asserted that it is not even essential for the Manipur Legislative Assembly to consider the subject.

The recommendation can only be forwarded to the central government through the cabinet process. It is sad that the state administration is not acting appropriately.

Yaingangpokpi Village Committee, Yaingangpokpi Meira Paibi, and Yaingangpokpi Bazar Board all participated in the demonstration.
