Manipur: Rampant Rains Raise Red Flags in Imphal, Congress Castigates ‘Failed’ President’s Rule

Imphal, Manipur: As relentless downpours continue to lash Manipur, pushing the Imphal River well past its high flood mark, the state’s already beleaguered populace faces a fresh wave of distress. The rising water levels, compounded by what the Congress party terms “mismanagement,” have sparked widespread concern, with warnings of imminent flooding prompting evacuation advisories for residents in low-lying areas of the state capital.

The grand old party wasted no time in pointing fingers, with Congress General Secretary for Communications, Jairam Ramesh, lambasting the current President’s Rule in Manipur as an unequivocal “failure.” Sharing a government advisory on the escalating flood situation, Ramesh took to X, formerly Twitter, to express the party’s dismay. He highlighted the persistent agony of the Manipuri people, alleging that their pleas for a Prime Ministerial visit continue to fall on deaf ears. Furthermore, Ramesh claimed that “discredited BJP MLAs” are preoccupied with “jockeying for power” instead of addressing the dire circumstances.

With heavy rains battering Manipur for the past three days, large swathes of Imphal are grappling with severe waterlogging, disrupting daily life and exacerbating the existing hardships. Officials report a significant surge in the water levels of several key rivers, including the Imphal and Serou, both vital arteries flowing through the Imphal valley. The Congress, meanwhile, asserts it is extending all possible assistance to the affected populace in these trying times, even as the specter of widespread flooding looms large over the troubled state.
