Manipur Reels Under Deluge: Over 56,000 Affected, Relief Efforts Underway
IMPHAL: Manipur is currently grappling with severe flash floods, impacting over 56,000 residents as overflowing rivers and breaches in embankments wreak havoc across the state. The relentless downpour has led to significant damage, with 10,477 houses submerged or partially destroyed, leaving 56,516 individuals directly affected by the calamity.
The situation remains grim, with one person reported missing after being swept away by a gushing river in the Imphal East district on June 2. Authorities have swiftly mobilised, evacuating 2,913 people from the inundated areas to safer grounds.
Adding to the woes, a fresh breach in the embankment of the Kongba river was reported on Monday at Bashikhong in Imphal East district, exacerbating the flood situation in already vulnerable localities.
In response to the escalating crisis, 57 relief camps have been established across the state, with the majority concentrated in the worst-hit Imphal East district, providing shelter and essential supplies to those displaced by the floods.
The state has also witnessed a concerning rise in landslides, with 93 such incidents reported over the past five days, further compounding the challenges faced by rescue and relief teams. Several localities in Imphal, the state capital, along with various parts of Imphal East district, remain submerged as the swollen river breached its embankments and overflowed in areas such as Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon.
