Manipur Remembers 24th Great Uprising Day with Solemn Tributes
Imphal, June 18, 2025 – Kekrupat in Imphal was the focal point today for a massive gathering as citizens converged to observe the 24th Great Uprising Day, a poignant commemoration of the historic mass movement that swept through the state on June 18, 2001.
A sea of people from diverse backgrounds flocked to the memorial site, offering heartfelt floral tributes to the 18 martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice while protesting the extension of the ceasefire agreement “without territorial limits” between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM). The air was thick with remembrance and respect for those who stood firm for Manipur’s integrity.
The day’s solemn programme, meticulously organised jointly by various civil society organisations with unwavering support from the martyrs’ families, commenced with a moving candlelight tribute in the early hours of the morning. This was followed by a public meeting where speakers underscored the paramount importance of safeguarding Manipur’s territorial integrity, a message that resonated deeply with the assembled crowd.
The observance served as a powerful testament to unity, sacrifice, and the unwavering commitment of the Manipuri people to protect their land. Participants stood shoulder to shoulder, honouring the brave souls who laid down their lives during the 2001 movement, a pivotal moment of resistance against the territorial provisions embedded within the ceasefire agreement.
The entire day’s events were dedicated to recalling the profound significance of that mass movement and acknowledging the supreme sacrifice made by the 18 individuals, who have since become enduring symbols of resistance in the ongoing fight for territorial protection.
