Manipur Resident Arrested in Tripura for Attempted Arms Smuggling to Bangladesh
Imphal: Security agencies, including the Customs Division, arrested a Manipur resident and seized four pistols with ammunition from his possession in Shingicherra, Tripura’s Khowai district late Sunday evening. The accused was allegedly attempting to smuggle the firearms into Bangladesh.
According to Tripura Police sources, the Customs Division in Agartala had received intelligence about a trans-border syndicate involved in arms and narcotics smuggling.
The suspect, identified as a resident of Manipur, was reportedly traveling aboard the Guwahati-Agartala Special train from Lumding while carrying the illegal contraband.
Acting on this information, authorities closely monitored the suspect’s movements. As the intended delivery point remained uncertain, security agencies launched an intensive operation, intercepting the suspect near Border Post Shingicherra in Khowai while he attempted to smuggle the weapons across the international border.
During the raid, officials recovered four .32mm pistols of Russian, US, and Indian origin, along with 150 bullets and five magazines.
A case has been registered under the Customs Act, 1962, and the accused has been remanded to judicial custody after being presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Khowai.
Authorities have launched a deeper investigation into the smuggling network, aiming to uncover potential accomplices and links to organized crime groups involved in illegal arms trade across the India-Bangladesh border.
