Manipur Rifles Jawan Allegedly Takes Own Life at Indo-Myanmar Border
Northeast Desk, September 4, 2024 — A 29-year-old Manipur Rifles jawan, identified as Divi Lawai Lamkang, allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle while on sentry duty in Chandel district on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. when Lamkang was stationed at the barracks along the Indo-Myanmar international border. According to officials, the other jawans were resting inside when they heard a gunshot. Rushing to the scene, they found Lamkang’s body lying in a pool of blood at the gate.
His service weapon was recovered at the site. Upon receiving the report, a team from the Chandel police station, accompanied by forensic experts, arrived to conduct inquest proceedings. The body was subsequently sent to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal East for a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
