Manipur: Second Arrest Made in Mangal Football Academy Sexual Assault Case

Imphal – The Manipur police have apprehended a second individual in connection with the alleged sexual assault of young female footballers at the Mangal Football Academy located in Khabam Lamkhai, Imphal East. The arrest of Khangembam Shitaljit Meitei, 28, a resident of Heingang Panthoibi Leikai, Imphal East district, occurred yesterday, May 5.

This development follows the initial arrest of a primary suspect on April 4, 2025, in the same case. Law enforcement officials have stated that the two accused individuals are implicated in the sexual assault of at least eleven minor girls who were receiving football training at the aforementioned academy.

Reports indicate that the young survivors endured the alleged abuse over an extended period during their enrollment at the sports institution. In response to the grave allegations, a formal case has been registered, and a comprehensive investigation is currently in progress. Authorities have chosen to withhold further specifics at this juncture, emphasizing the delicate nature of the case and the fact that the inquiry is still active.

The recent arrest has amplified the mounting apprehension regarding the safety and welfare of young athletes within training academies. Various civil society organizations and advocates for child rights are urgently demanding decisive action and systemic changes to strengthen protective measures for minors participating in sports institutions.
