Manipur: Security beefed up ahead of election
Guwahati: Appropriate CAPF personnel have been posted in all polling stations, especially in hill regions, to ensure that voters may come out freely and exercise their franchise without being intimidated by external forces, Manipur CEO Rajesh Agrawal said on Sunday.
He said that over 60 FIRs had been filed in the last 40 days in connection with pre-poll violence in Manipur and that over 60 people had been arrested as a result of the FIRs.
He added that, in addition to the FIR cases, the commission has been investigating several suo-motu matters relating to poll violence. “We are acting on any instinct we have about poll violence, significant or minor,” he continued.
He stated that the commission has zero tolerance for any form of violence or intimidation and that the commission is working with the state authorities to apprehend all perpetrators of poll violence.
Because the districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, which will go to polls in the first phase, have been designated as hypersensitive, a higher contingent of CAPF personnel has been deployed in these two districts to prevent any untoward incidents.
“We are prepared for the first phase of the poll. Personnel from the polling station are on their way to their assigned stations. “We hope that on election day, voters come out in large numbers and utilize their right to vote,” he remarked.”
It may be mentioned that the first phase of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election will be held on Monday.
