Manipur Security Forces Crack Down on Insurgent Groups in Coordinated State-Wide Operation

Imphal: Security forces in Manipur have successfully apprehended numerous operatives from various insurgent factions following a series of coordinated intelligence-led operations conducted across the state on May 15th and 16th. The crackdown specifically targeted groups involved in extortion and recruitment activities, marking a significant step in the region’s ongoing security efforts.

In Imphal West District, on May 16th, Ningthoukhongjam Malemnganba Meitei, an active member of the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) [KCP (PWG)], was taken into custody at Sagolsem Lampak, Langthabal Kunja Mayai Leikai. Meitei is suspected of involvement in extortion rackets. The operation resulted in the seizure of a mobile phone and a black side bag containing ₹720, underscoring the financial motivations behind militant activities.

Further operations in Imphal East District on the same day led to the arrest of two more KCP (PWG) operatives, identified as Lambalmayum Bobo Meetei and Yumnam Chandra Meetei. They were apprehended in the Yourbung and Sawombung areas under the jurisdiction of Lamlai Police Station, reportedly in connection with extortion activities. Authorities recovered two mobile phones, two Aadhaar cards, and ₹2,780 from their possession, providing further insight into the financial networks supporting these groups.

Separately in Imphal East, Oinam Milan Singh, an operative associated with the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive) [PREPAK (Pro)], was arrested on charges of extortion and issuing threats. Singh was found in possession of a vehicle and two mobile phones, highlighting the diverse methods employed by insurgents to exert influence and acquire resources.

The security forces also focused on the Chin Kuki National Defence Force (CKNDF), leading to the arrest of Thongkhohou Touthang in Churachandpur District on May 15th. Touthang is accused of actively recruiting local youth for armed insurgency and facilitating cross-border movements. His apprehension is considered a significant blow to the group’s recruitment capabilities. One mobile phone and a SIM card were confiscated during the operation.

Extending their operations to Thoubal District, authorities apprehended Hijam Jiten, an operative of the United National Liberation Front (Progressive) [UNLF (P)]. Jiten was arrested for allegedly extorting funds from educational institutions. The police recovered a two-wheeler and a mobile phone, illustrating the wide-ranging targets of insurgent fundraising activities.

In Bishnupur District, Ningthoujam Abungte Singh, with links to PREPAK (Pro), was arrested on suspicion of involvement in recruiting youth for operations in neighboring Myanmar. This arrest is considered crucial in disrupting the flow of manpower to the insurgent groups. A mobile phone was seized from Singh, further emphasizing the role of technology in these operations.
