Manipur: Senapati District Issues Flood Advisory Amid Heavy Rainfall and Barak River Tragedy
Imphal: In response to continuous heavy rainfall and rapidly rising water levels in rivers and hill streams, the Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Senapati, has issued a public advisory urging residents to exercise extreme caution, particularly near riverbanks and low-lying areas.
The advisory follows a tragic drowning incident in the Barak River, which has heightened public concern over safety near water bodies during the current weather conditions. The administration warned of possible breaches in riverbanks and potential overflow into adjacent areas due to the persistent downpour.
Residents have been urged to avoid walking or driving through flowing water, refrain from swimming or attempting to cross flooded rivers and streams, and stay away from floodwaters that may contain hazardous substances such as sewage or chemicals. The public has also been cautioned to avoid any contact with submerged transformers, electric poles, wires, or inverters, which pose severe electrical hazards.
Citizens are advised to stay updated through local news channels and official bulletins and to adhere strictly to any evacuation orders or safety instructions issued by local authorities. All outdoor activities, including farming and fishing, should be postponed until weather conditions stabilize, and unnecessary travel to flood-prone areas should be avoided.
People have been instructed to turn off all electrical appliances if water enters their homes to reduce the risk of electrocution. Special attention has been directed toward protecting vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, who should remain in safe areas until further notice.
The DDMA has activated an emergency helpline—+91-7628992200—for citizens to report emergencies or seek assistance. Authorities have called for increased vigilance and urged the public to cooperate fully to ensure community safety during this high-alert period.
