Manipur Set to Revolutionise Agriculture with Digital Initiative
Imphal: The Manipur government has announced plans to introduce digital agriculture in the state, aiming to enhance efficiency and data-driven policymaking.
This significant initiative was revealed by Peter Salam, Director of Agriculture, during the launch of the State Krishi Mela at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen.
According to Salam, digital agriculture will facilitate the structured documentation of landholding patterns across the state.
The initiative aims to collect comprehensive data, including the extent of land under cultivation, types of crops being grown, past cultivation trends, and projected crop cycles. This data will enable policymakers, scientists, and agricultural institutions to make informed decisions, ultimately benefiting farmers.
The agricultural sector remains a crucial part of Manipur’s economy, with 53% of the population engaged in agriculture, contributing approximately 25% to the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). However, Salam acknowledged that certain agricultural lands have been affected by conflict. He assured that the government has provided compensation to affected farmers to help them sustain their livelihood.
The State Krishi Mela, which commenced on Tuesday, is an annual event that brings together farmers, scientists, and agricultural experts. This year’s fair features around 40 stalls showcasing diverse agricultural products, with the participation of approximately 200 progressive farmers.
The initiative marks a significant step towards integrating technology with agriculture, paving the way for a more resilient and data-driven farming ecosystem in Manipur.
