Manipur: Student Protest at Dhanamanjuri University Over Examination Mode Escalates

Northeast Desk, 14th June: Students at Dhanamanjuri University staged a protest on June 13, vehemently opposing the administration’s decision regarding the mode of semester examinations. The demonstrators, visibly upset, set benches and desks on fire outside the university’s administration block.

The agitation centered around the demand for the appointment of a new vice-chancellor and registrar, alongside the insistence on conducting the delayed December 2023 semester exams in an online format. According to a student spokesperson, the prolonged crisis had already caused delays in scheduling the exams, and the student body and university authorities had previously discussed various issues related to their conduct.

However, tensions escalated as authorities reportedly attempted to enforce an offline examination mode against the students’ preferences for an online format. The students argued for consistency, noting discrepancies where department-level exams were decentralized, with some students required to appear offline at designated centers, while others could take exams online.

Expressing frustration over the perceived lack of response to their demands, the protesting students issued a stern warning of further agitation if their concerns were not addressed promptly.

The protest intensified at the administrative building, prompting the deployment of police personnel to maintain order and disperse the demonstrators gathered at the site.
