Manipur: Tamenglong Celebrates ‘Good Governance Day’ with Focus on Tribal Development
Imphal: The District Administration of Tamenglong, Manipur, commemorated the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 23 by organizing a ‘Good Governance Day’ event at Tamenglong Higher Secondary School.
This year’s theme, Good Governance towards Tribal Areas, underscored the government’s commitment to transparent and effective administration in rural and tribal regions.
Dignitaries such as D. Meidinbui, SDO Tamenglong; Josiah T. Pamei, Additional Superintendent of Police; Namthango Kahmei, SDC Tamenglong; Abdul Mazeed Shah, SDC Tamenglong; Christopher Abonpou, ZEO; and Dr. G. Majachunglu, CMO, attended the event alongside other district officials and the general public.
In his opening remarks, D. Meidinbui highlighted the week-long celebrations that featured various activities aimed at strengthening the connection between governance and rural communities. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to accountability and effective service delivery.
Speaking on behalf of the police department, Josiah T. Pamei addressed rising safety concerns caused by increased vehicle congestion in Tamenglong. To improve traffic management, six traffic points have been established in the town. He also announced the upcoming installation of a police station at Kaimai village along National Highway-137 and a Women Police Station at Tamenglong Police Station to handle cases of women and child abuse, noting the relatively lower incidence of such cases in the region.
In education, Christopher Abonpou shared the development of a new residential school in Langmei (Ritiang) village, Tamei Sub-Division, as a major step forward for the district’s education sector.
Joel Gangmei, RFO of the Tamenglong division, provided updates on environmental initiatives. The forest department has successfully planted one lakh saplings this year and aims to increase this number next year. He also highlighted the successful export of 10 metric tons of bamboo shoots to Guwahati, showcasing the district’s potential in sustainable agricultural exports.
The event featured stalls from various departments, enabling attendees to access information, voice grievances, and avail themselves of services. Departments such as Horticulture and Agriculture actively engaged with the public, distributing free vegetable seeds to promote agricultural growth.
The celebration served as a platform to reinforce the government’s dedication to empowering tribal areas, fostering education, environmental sustainability, and community well-being in Tamenglong.
