Manipur: Tension Escalates in Moreh Town as Armed Miscreants Clash with Security Forces, one CDO personnel killed
Northeast Desk, 17th January: Fresh exchanges of fire erupted in Moreh town, Manipur, as armed miscreants attacked security forces near Ema Kondong Lairembi Devi Mandir. In the ambush at around 4 am, armed assailants targeted IRB personnel with rocket-propelled grenades and live rounds from the hilltop of Chikim Village. The attack resulted in the death of one CDO personnel and injuries to another.
The Assam Rifles, stationed just 20 meters from the IRB Post, swiftly responded, using Bullet Proof Vehicles to cover and protect the IRB personnel. Following the initial ambush, armed miscreants launched another attack at around 5:10 am near the SBI Bank Building Dekhunai Resort, where the Superintendent of Special Commando sought shelter. Rocket Propelled Grenades were reportedly used from Moreh Ward No. 7 Canan Veng in this incident, leading to injuries to one IRB personnel who is receiving treatment at the Assam Rifles’ Medical Room in KLP.
Intense crossfire is ongoing at the Indo-Myanmar Border Town Moreh, involving armed miscreants and a combined team of security forces, including Assam Rifles, Gorkha Regiment, BSF, Special Commando, Moreh Commando, 5th and 6th IRB, and 8 Manipur Rifles (MR).
The escalation follows a warning from Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal and Chandel on January 16, urging the State Government, District Administration, and Superintendent of Police Tengnoupal to release Philips K. Khongsai and Hemkholal Mate within 24 hours. Failure to comply would result in serious repercussions, with the responsibility placed on the government, district administration, and Tengnoupal Superintendent.
