Manipur: Tensions Averted in Imphal East as Security Forces Intervene in Land Dispute

Imphal, Manipur: A potential flare-up was swiftly contained in Manipur’s Imphal East on Sunday morning, as security forces intervened in a land ownership dispute between farmers from different communities. The incident, which began around 10 am in Sadu Lampak village, near a Kuki settlement, saw prompt action by authorities to de-escalate rising tensions.

The disagreement originated when a Meitei farmer from Leitanpokpi arrived with his tractor to cultivate a paddy field. Local Kuki residents challenged his claim to the land, asserting he had no ownership rights. As the verbal exchange escalated, more individuals from both communities converged at the site, raising concerns given the region’s sensitive ethnic dynamics.

Manipur Police, in an official communication, confirmed the incident, stating, “Some Kuki villagers nearby came and objected saying the paddy field does not belong to him. Meanwhile some Meitei nearby also came to the site.” Prompt deployment of security personnel, including the Additional Superintendent of Police (Intelligence) and central security forces, already present in the vicinity, played a crucial role in containing the situation. Further reinforcements, led by the Superintendent of Police, were dispatched as a precautionary measure to ensure continued calm.

Authorities have also issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation on social media platforms. “Videos are circulating claiming that Kukis came down to stop Meitei farmers. The public is requested not to believe in rumours,” the Manipur Police stated, urging residents to rely only on verified information. The timely intervention by security forces successfully prevented the dispute from spiralling into a larger conflict, highlighting the ongoing efforts to maintain peace in the region.
