Manipur: Tensions Flare in Jiribam as Armed Attack Targets Security Forces Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s Visit
Northeast Desk, 8th July: In a troubling development, armed miscreants launched a bold attack on security forces in Jiribam’s Faiton Area today, just hours before the scheduled visit of Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition. Reports indicate that the assailants fired upon security personnel, prompting a swift retaliation. Multiple sources confirm that several security personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has arrived in Assam’s Silchar ahead of his planned visit to Manipur. During his stay in Assam, he is slated to meet with individuals affected by the severe floods that have recently devastated the state, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the state party.
This visit marks Gandhi’s inaugural trip to the Northeast since assuming leadership as the Leader of the Opposition. It comes at a critical juncture as Assam continues to contend with the aftermath of relentless rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding, landslides, and swollen rivers. The calamitous deluge has affected an estimated 22.70 lakh people across 28 districts, underscoring the urgent need for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
