Manipur: Three Arrested Following Firing Incident Near Polling Station in East Imphal District

Northeast Desk, 20th April: In a significant development, the Manipur Police apprehended three individuals linked to a firing incident near a polling station in the East Imphal district on April 19, during the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The incident, which occurred at Moirangkampu primary school, resulted in one person sustaining injuries, causing concern amidst the electoral proceedings.

The arrested individuals, identified as Leichombam Jemson Singh (34 years old), Nongthombam Ratan (47 years old), and Khumukcham Angamba (32 years old), were found in possession of a cache of weaponry, including 32 pistols with eight live ammunitions, three mobile phones, one car, and cash amounting to Rs 1.5 lakhs.

This unfortunate episode adds to the series of reported disturbances during the electoral process in Manipur, including instances of firing, intimidation, booth capturing, and EVM damage across various polling stations. Despite these challenges, Manipur recorded a commendable voter turnout of over 68 per cent, underlining the resilience of its electorate.

The swift action taken by the State Police in apprehending the suspects underscores the commitment to upholding peace and security during crucial electoral events, underscoring the significance of maintaining law and order in the democratic fabric of the nation.
