Manipur Tribal Groups Agree to End Road Taxes Amidst Tensions
Imphal: In a significant development aimed at easing tensions in Manipur, the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) of Kangpokpi district and the Naga Peoples’ Organisation (NPO) of Senapati district have reached a mutual agreement to lift all taxes on Naga trucks and commuters traveling through Kuki-dominated regions.
A joint statement issued on Thursday, November 21, following a crucial meeting, confirmed that Naga commuters will no longer face harassment or undue levies while passing through Kuki areas. The agreement extends to Naga traders, commercial goods, and vehicles originating from Senapati district.
To ensure smooth implementation, COTU has pledged to take full responsibility for resolving any taxation-related issues that may arise. The statement further emphasized that any violation of the agreement will be met with appropriate action, the severity of which will depend on the nature of the offense.
This development comes amidst ongoing tensions between various ethnic groups in Manipur. The joint decision by COTU and NPO is seen as a positive step towards restoring peace and harmony in the region.
