Manipur: UKNA Member Allegedly Killed Amidst Ongoing Tensions in Churachandpur
Northeast Desk, 1st October: Satkhohao Haokip, reportedly a member of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), was allegedly shot dead by unidentified armed assailants at his residence in Churachandpur during the night of September 30 to October 1. The murder adds to the growing violence and unrest in Manipur, a state already plagued by ethnic and insurgent conflicts.
Churachandpur, known for its history of ethnic strife, particularly between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, has long been a hotspot for violence. Insurgent activity further complicates the region’s fragile security situation. While the exact motives behind Haokip’s killing remain unclear, it underscores the region’s volatile conditions.
In the wake of continued unrest, the Manipur government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for another six months, effective from September 26, 2024. The act will apply to most parts of the state, excluding areas under the jurisdiction of 19 police stations. This decision reflects the state’s ongoing ethnic violence and insurgent threats.
AFSPA, which has been in effect in Manipur since the 1980s, grants special powers to the armed forces in “disturbed areas” to help maintain law and order. Authorities extended the act, citing the complexity of the current situation and deeming it premature to reassess the “disturbed area” status.
As the investigation into Haokip’s murder continues, the situation in Manipur remains tense, with local authorities and security forces on high alert.
