Manipur: United Naga Council Issues Statement on Emergence of Unrecognized Organizations

Manipur: The United Naga Council (UNC), the primary body representing Nagas in Manipur, has released a press statement addressing the formation of a new organization, the “United Tribal Council Manipur.”

The UNC expressed concerns about the proliferation of groups with names such as “United Tribal,” “All Manipur,” “Tribal Unity,” and “Indigenous Tribal,” which claim to represent various communities but lack a proper grassroots structure or legitimate mandate.

The UNC emphasized a message it had previously shared on June 16, 2023, through social media and print outlets, stating that statements or narratives from these unrecognized bodies do not reflect the authentic voice or aspirations of the people.

The council reiterated that these emerging groups do not possess legitimate representation and urged the public to be cautious about accepting their claims of authority.

The statement seeks to dispel confusion surrounding the presence of these organizations and reaffirm the UNC’s position as the genuine apex body for the Naga community in the region.
