Manipur: UNLF Observes “Kathokhrabasingee Ningshing Numit”
Northeast Desk, 19th May: The United National Liberation Front (UNLF) led by Pambei observed “Kathokhrabasingee Ningshing Numit” at Nongpok Sanjenbam on May 18. The event paid homage to those who sacrificed their lives in the outfit’s 60-year struggle for freedom.
During the ceremony, Pambei-led UNLF members, led by M Nongyai, offered floral tributes to the fallen comrades. Addressing the media, acting chairman M Nongyai stated that while a peace agreement had been signed between the outfit and the Government of India, no dialogue has commenced yet. He emphasized that the dialogue would be conducted directly with GoI leaders, not at a bureaucratic level, and may commence after the formation of a new government at the Centre. Nongyai mentioned that the outfit would prepare a white paper on their demands, which may take some time.
Regarding reports of some cadres surrendering to Assam Rifles, Nongyai clarified that cadres in Myanmar faced challenges and were advised to return to Manipur. However, upon their return journey, encounters with Burma-based PDF cadres hindered their progress. To ensure their safety, they contacted Manipur police and Assam Rifles stationed along the Indo-Myanmar border.
The event witnessed the presence of prominent figures including UNLF general secretary Chabungbam Thanil, finance secretary I Tonsana, Advocate Khaidem Mani, and representatives from various organizations such as Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup, Universal Mother’s Organisation (UMO), and Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS).
The observance served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom and the ongoing challenges faced by those involved in the liberation movement.
